George Bower was born in Herston or Dorset in Dorsetshire, UK. He
came to Australia, aged 10 on the Hornet with his parents. He lived
in King Street, Melbourne. George was a Stonemason. He married
Elizabeth Ann Luty in Melbourne in June 1866 in St. James Church of
England. Occupation on certificate Stone Cutter, parents George Bower
and Louisa Widdrow. Witnesses to marriage were William Luty who made
his mark and James John Howard, who would be his uncle-in-law as he
was married to Alice Grayshaw, daughter of William and Lucy Gration.
After their daughter Louisa was born in 1878, they moved to Sydney,
but in 1876, they were residing in Cromwell Street, Collingwood.
George seems to have had a sister Maria who married someone by the
name of Cross and another sister Louisa, who had a daughter Louisa who
married someone called Williams. This information is on the back of
Louisa Bower's wedding photo. Beryl Stanley states that all Louisa
Bower's bridesmaids were chosen for her by their mothers who wre aunts
of ether her or William. She couldn't refuse her cousins unless she
wanted to cause real problems. According to George's Marriage
Certificate, he was 21 at the time of marriage in 1866, but when
daughter Louisa was born in 1870, he registered his age as being 22.
George was living at Campbell Street Collingwood at the time of
Louisa's birth. N.B. There are photographs in the researcher's
possession of some of the abovenamed nieces of George Bower.
Beryl (descendant of George Bower) and Claude Stanley visited Swanage
in 1980. They went by car ferry across the estuary from Bournemouth
(a lovely estuary) and found Swanage, a beautiful seaside fishing
port. They found Herston to be the approach side of the town and
Durlston the far side of the town. Many of the residents were named
Burt. They spoke to one resident who looked very like cousin Jeffery
Burt. In the old cemetery and right at its entrance was a built up
grave and the top plate read "Isaac Bower" died 1835. In a "mechanics
institute", now a play house, was a big marble shield commemorating
the gifts by two Burts and two others which made the first building
possible. A plate in the road was "a patent of Woodrow."
