Hattie was picking blackberries with Blanch. They were returning duringa thunderstorm. At a fence there was a pile of brush, Hattie went onone side and Blanch went on the other. Hattie was struck by lightningand was killed when she was 16. Family oral history
Newspaper Account of the Death of Hattie Bower from the MillersburgRepublican, July 9, 1903
The account spells all the Bower names Bowers.
Killed by Lightning
Miss Hattie Bowers, of Near Glenmont, the Victim.
The Accident Occurred in an Open Field Not Far From Her Home.
A very sad accident occurred last Thursday afternoon, July 2, about2 o'clock, one mile south of Glenmont, on the farm owned by the childrenof the late John Bowers, which resulted in the death of Miss HattieBowers.
The two younger Bowers girls, Hattie and Blanche, had gone to themountain-tea hill on the west end of the farm just after dinner. Havinggathered what mountain-tea they wanted, and noticing the approach ofstorm clouds, they started for their home.
While crossing an open field about two hundred and fifty yards fromthe house, the storm not seeming very near, Hattie expressed herintention of turning aside to look after the cattle. She had not gonetwenty-five feet from her sister, when a flash of lightning prostratedboth girls to the earth, instantly killing Hattie, and momentarilystunning Blanche. The later recovered herself, hastened to her sister'sside and attempted to raise her from the ground, but at once perceivedthat she was fatally injured.
The cries of Blanche soon brought Channing Gray and his brother,Harry who were working on the farm, also her brother, Leonard Bowers, wholives near by, They carried her to the house at once, but on reachingit, life was found to be extinct. Blanche, however soon recoveredentirely from her shock.
Miss Hattie was universally loved and respected by all who knewher. She was gentle and loving in disposition, friendly and helpful toall, having made an unusual number of friends for one so young. Sheleaves her immediate family, three sisters, Della, Mary J., and Blanche, and two brothers, Leonard and Wilmer. Three years ago, at the age ofthirteen, she gave herself to the Master, uniting with the Church ofChrist at Glenmont. In the church , bible school and Christian Endeavorshe was a faithful and valued member. The estimation in which she washeld in the community was attested by the very large number who assembledat the funeral Service, which were conducted by her pastor W. R. Walkeron Saturday July 4. Her remains were laid to rest in the GlenmontCemetery, beside her father and mother, who prededed her to the spiritland several years ago.

SUMMARY OF MY BOWERS FAMILY RESEARCH IN TENNESSEE
NOTES REVISED 5 Aug 2000
In about 1852 My G-G-G-Grandfather Samuel Bowers moved his family from Roane County, Tennessee, to Newton County, Missouri. I believe that the 3 generations of Bowers before him had resided in Tennessee. These included grandfathers James, William, and James.
Mr. Van Payne of Puyallup, WA. did some research into several lines of Bowers from eastern Tennessee, circa 1800, during the 1980's (much of those lines found in the "Ancestral File" are his submissions). He has identified 3 different groups of Bowers. These are descendants of
(1)James Bowers (my line) b.1745, d1789
(2)Christian Bowers
(3)Green Bowers (from Orange Co., N.C.)
I believe the Christian Bowers line (Christian II and brother John) appear in Greene Co about 1822. This is probably after my family had migrated to Roane Co. They were German immigrants via Shenandoah Co, Va. Many were members of St. James Lutheran Church. Early research into the Christian Bowers line was in a book by Mr. Jack Masters, Nashville, TN. Additional information on that line can be found at his web site: www.nashville.com/~jack.masters/jmast.html More recently the line has been extensively researched by Mikhael Bowers of Houston, Tx. He may be reached at
The Green Bowers line first appeared in Roane Co about 1822. Many of Green's family stayed in N.C. and most migrated to Missouri and on by 1850. This line has been researched by Mr. Howard Bowers, presently of Oak Ridge, TN. I believe he can be reached at
JAMES BOWERS LINE:
James Bowers died in 1789 in Greene, Co. and left a will which included a son, William (see last paragraph). William Bowers from my line was born in Virginia in 1773 or '74. Assuming this is the same family, Van P's files indicate the 2 sibling born after him were born in Greene Co, Tennessee. The first white settlers in Greene County settled there about 1778 so this would put the Bowers as very early settlers. William's wife may have been Katherine Weems. If that is true their marraige in 1793 puts them in Greene County at the time.
Van P. cites muster records of Captain Edward Tate's Company which show William as as a member and owner of 229 acres in Green Co in 1798. This was an early military group formed to defend against Indians. He also has found court records which show William as a Justice in Green Co in 1805 and appointed to a county committee in 1806. Additional court records from Greene County in 1811 show William agreeing to legal responsibility for an illegitamate child, belonging to a Margaret Long.
This William had heirs: James, John, William, and Elizabeth Kinman based on his will filed after his death in 1855. The will has no mention of a wife. There may have been an older child, Katherine (Kitty). Roane county marraige records show a Kitty Bowers married 22 Dec 1810 to Rueben Phillips. If she is another sister then she must have died or been out of the picture by 1855 since she is not mentioned in her Father's will either.
I believe James and Elizabeth married brother and sister, Feraby and Claiborn Kinman, respectively.
Van P. places the births of Williams' children at "Lick Creek, Greene Co., Tn". Census records also show William Jr. was born in Greene County. I located an actual creek named "Lick Creek" on period maps. It appears to flow southwest to the Nolichnoky River and on to the Tennessee River. It is in an area northwest of present day Greenville presumably in Greene Co., but very close to Hawkins Co. I have been told that the "Lick Creek" settlement was located between present day Albany and Ottway.
I understand that when Greene Co was formed in 1783 it encompassed the complete eastern segment of Tennessee, south of the Tenn. River. Between 1783-1815 it was progressively disected and reorganized into approximately 11 counties which are there today. It was very possible to have lived in 2 or 3 different counties and never have moved. For some time I have worked on the assumption that the family had originally settled north of the Tennessee River (present Roane Co).
However it now appears that James(1st) settled in Eastern Tennessee, Greene Co, along the Lick Creek, and that the family lived in that area 35-40 yrs until William and his family migrated northwest, across the Tennessee River, into Roane Co, approximately 1813-15. Van P. believes land records reflect this. A likely assumption is that this move followed the death of his mother, Kissa, at the previous homeplace. It may be that some of William's children may have already been in Roane, Co. Record of a John Bowers appears in road records, 1808.
By 1817, William, James, William Jr., and John are shown on tax lists of Roane County as land owners in the Emory/Little Emory River areas. This is in eastern Roane County, close to Harriman, TN. This country is hilly (a Kansan would call it mountainous) and forrested, crossed by numerous rivers. By the 1850's many ferries operated there. Many other subsequent family records are found in Roane County.
William and son James (who was the father of Samuel) became established, possibly wealthy farmers in this location. James and Feraby were married in Rhea Co., adjacent to Roane, in 1819, so some additional research there is called for. Even though the river land was very fertile, it is still difficult to imagine how any prosperous farming operation could have been established in the area. Never-the-less, probate records indicate both with sizable estates, each with over 200 acres, several slaves, and numerous farm equiptment. James died in 1844 and his father, about 7-9 yrs later, approximately 1855.
A stone for Rev. Wm. Bower (Jr) has been located in remnants of an old cemetary over looking the Emory River. No other family burial plots have been found.
A James Bowers left a will in Greene Co in 1789 which lists a son William. Van Payne believes this is my ancestor William. I have not satisfactorly documented the connection but the dates and locations seem to match. For some time this has been my number 1 research priority. With that assumption the Descendants of James BOWERS wiould look like this:
