JOHN BOWER, of Bridlington, m. Agnes [bur. 6 April, 1568], and was bur. 6 Nov. 1569, leaving issue, a son,

JOHN, of whom presently. He m. 2ndly, 5 Jan. 1576, Margaret Watson and d. 2 March, 1590, having by her had issue. His son by the 1st marriage,

JOHN BOWER, of Bridlington, bapt. 18 Feb. 1570, m. 18 May, 1592, Jean Bonfeylde [bapt. 28 Feb. 1568), and was bur. 6 Dec. 1611, leaving issue, a son,

WILLIAM BOWER, of Bridlington, Merchant, bapt. 14 May, 1598. He owned lands at Bridlington, Ringborough, East Newton, Little Habden, Thorpgarth, Aldborough, Burythorpe, with the Lordship of Skelton, and was Chief Lord of the manor of Burlington, 1656. He was a considerable benefactor to his native town, having, amongst other legacies, left 20 pounds per annum, for ever, "for maintaining and edvcating of the poore children of Bridlington and Key in the art of carding, kniting and spining of wooll." By his wife Thomasine Bows [bur. 17 Sep. 1657], he had with other issue, an eldest son,

JOHN BOWER, of Bridlington, elected Chief Lord-Feoffee, of the Manor of Bridlington 1678, m. 1652, Catherine Rogers, dau of William Bower, of Cloughton, and had issue, several sons and daus., of whom Priscilla, m. 10 Aug. 1700, Ralph Creyke, of Marton, Bridlington. The eldest son,

WILLIAM BOWER, of Bridlington, b. 1654, m. 1stly, 1676, Sarah, dau. Of Jasper Belt, of Bossall, son of Sir Robert Belt, of Bossall, and left issue.

 

 

ARMS--Sable, a human leg, couped at the thigh, transpierced by a broken spear, in bend, proper; on a canton argent, a tower gules. [Visitation of Durham, 1615; by William Bower, of Oxenfield, Durham, brother of John Bower, of Bridlington. The arms are on the tomb of William Bower, of Bridlington [above], who was baptized 1598, and died 1672.
