Medieval German Birth Records
1535-1650

On January 16, 2001 I received a file of German birth records from Mr. Glenn Geisheimer. He had submitted it for placement here. Upon opening that file, I discovered it wasn't just a 'file' but a database with 19,382 Bauer, Baur, etc. birth records from Germany dating from 1543 to 1905... parents included. We are very proud to display this database, amounting to nearly 50,000 individuals.

In this particular data you will find 1,656 records dating 1535-1650. Those from 1651-1905 are displayed in the vital records section of the Homestead.

The index is set up alphabetically by surname. There are multiple variant spellings, however there are NO BOWER or BOWERS. Every effort was made to keep like first names together, however some names had so many that multiple files were necessary. In those cases, dates are given in the index. Because of this procedure, the files are not the same size.

An explanation of the columns is necessary here as there are no headings. You will see eight columns for each record, their definition given here:

1 - Child's name
2 - Event type. There are two types of records in the database ~ birth and christening.
3 - Year of event
4 - State
5 - District; county
6 - City, town, village
7 - Father
8 - Mother

To make your selection, please click on the gold button in the left column.

WARNING: These files are LARGE and each one may take up to 3 minutes to open, depending on your modem. Download times will be different for each file.
