| Message: | Hi, You've reached the Webmistress of Bower Family Homestead. I think you may be a little confused. Here at the Homestead we research ALL Bower[s], Bauer and Baur surnames plus their 80+ variant spellings. The fact that you've only seen the Bowers surname coming from the British Isles could be because we don't have any Bowers data from Germany yet. There are many, many [German] Bauer ancestors whose descendants now carry the [British] Bower name simply because they couldn't spell their names to the immigration officials and "Bower" was probably the only way the official knew how to spell it. To make matters more difficult, there are a few Bauer ancestors who made their way to England, then their children [British born] came to America; where do you think they're listed as being born/from? Yep, Bauer[s] from England! Traditionally though, Bauer is German/Austrian, Baur is Austrian/Swiss, Baure is French, Bower[s] is English. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Replying to: I looked at the site and noticed that the name BOWERS seems to be traced back to the british isles but I know my family originally came from germany with the name BAUER. I realize that our name was americanized during immigration. I just want to know if, when, and how the name spread from the british iles. And if there are any other people with the name who can trace there ancestry back to germany as well. |
