Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites On The Internet -- Over 56,000 links to virtually every subject dealing with genealogy that you might need; takes a while to load

 

GenConnect -- A RootsWeb project of surname forums set up for you to leave queries. This site maintains the boards for the surnames Bower, Bauer, and Baur (small wonder....).

 

World Wide Top-100 Genealogy Sites -- Ever wonder what your peers think are the world's top genealogy sites? Not your run-of-the-mill link site. This one will surprise you!

Sites with searchable databases -- Names....names....give us names! These sites offer you the opportunity to look at millions of them, generally along with something about each...

 

Ancestry Genealogy Research -- A virtual library on the web! This is a commercial site, however they offer free databases every week. You'll find the free Social Security Death Index here, too.

 

Bureau of Land Management -- Looking for your ancestor's original land grant? This is the site to visit. Only some of the states east of the Mississippi River are currently listed. Still, a good site to bookmark.

 

Family Search -- The Mormon's International Genealogical Index (IGI) and Ancestral File online!

 

Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site -- A commercial site offering free information on surnames and where to find them.

 

Federation of East European Family History Societies -- A network of website databases amounting to over 700 pages of surname indexes. Sites categorized by ethnicity, religion and race; also has map rooms for easy research. An excellent place to start your Eastern European research!

 

GENDEX - A genealogical index full of names and lineage charts

 

GenForum -- Leave queries on the web under each of your surnames.

 

Genealogy's Most Wanted -- Leave information about your "Most Wanted" ancestor with them.

 

Olive Tree Genealogy Homepage - A wonderful site particularly if you're looking for early immigrants; lots of ships passengers lists

 

The Surname Web - The Genealogy Web Project of surname resource centers, and personal genealogy pages on the web

 

U.S. GenWeb Project -- Looking for information on a specific county in your state? This is the place to check it out. Use their State Archives Search Engine to find actual transcriptions of public domain records such as copies of census records, marriage bonds, wills, tombstone readings, and other public documents.

Sites with specific subjects

 

SAMPUBCO -- Looking for a will? This site has been putting the indexes on line! Only a few states are represented, though.

 

Books We Own -- People willing to do lookups from books in their personal home libraries. Many of the volunteers are CD owners.

 

Cybrary of the Holocaust -- A site dedicated to preserving the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust. A search engine is provided where you can look up names, but the most powerful impact of this site comes from the pictures. You won't leave this site unmoved.

Palatines to America Homepage -- For those of you with German ancestry, this is a good place to look at particularly if you have early German immigrants in your lines.
