2. SARAH A.2 BOWERS (JOHN HENRY1) was born February 04, 1854 in Maryland, and died November 08,1906. She married WILLIAM FRANKLIN NATION1 October 16, 1875 in Linn County, Iowa1, son of JOELNATION and MARY GRITTON. Notes for WILLIAM FRANKLIN NATION:

William is said to have led a rather colorful life. When he filed for a pension in 1919 to the Dept. of Iowa, Grand Army of the Republic, for service in the Civil War, he was rejected on the grounds of desertion. William Nation enlisted first from Henderson, Illinois, was a Private F 102 Illinois Infantry. He enlisted August 13, 1862, mustered in September 2, 1862 and deserted October 27, 1862.

He then enlisted as William Franklin in Company G 9 Iowa Calvary onAugust 21, 1863, mustered in August 21, 1863, and deserted July 17, 1863 (note discrepency in dates here). He tried again to register as William Nolan but was rejected by mustering officer January 31, 1863. (again discrepancy in dates.)

The pension file shows his residence as 1524 W. 4th Street, Waterloo, Iowa. He had lived in Tama County for 45 years as a farmer.

According to William's obituary, he was captured, held in a Confederate prison for three days, and paroled, then enlisted in Iowa cavalry and served for two years under the name William Franklin since "on account of his parole, he could not enlist under his own name."

Lorraine Friess says that William Nation was not a very nice person. When Sarah died, William was left with Pearle, Sade and Mame in Iowa, somewhere near Waterloo. Irvin was on his own by then. Sade married Ray Bowers, a first cousin. Mame also married and moved to Arlington, SD. Pearle was working in a hat factory in Waterloo and her dad decided to remarry. He threw her out of the house, and she did not have enough money to live on so she went to Arlington, SD to live with her sister Mame and Mame's husband. It was in Arlington, SD that Pearle met Jake, and they married (perhaps in Iowa).
