Obituary: Katherine " Kate" Bower Evans- 1919-Rockland County Times-1919
The Whole Upper Section of Haverstraw Town Shocked at the Death of Mrs. John
Evans
Nearly the whole town of Haverstraw, particularly the Mead's Corner-Garnerville
section was inexpressively shocked and saddened beyond description at the sudden
death of Mrs. John Evans, wife of Justice of the Peace, John Evans at her home
in Mead's Corner about 3 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Evans was active about her home attending to her household duties and in
her usual happy mood and apparent good health, when stricken, her death coming
almost instantly, the end coming before medical assistance or outside aid could
be secured.
Mrs. Evans prior to her marriage was Miss Kate Bower, a grand-daughter of the
late Captain Daniel B. Brewster of Civil War fame, and exceedingly popular among
a most wide circle of friends, possessing one of those rare dispositions that
always makes out of an acquaintance an enthusiastic friendship.
In recent years, she has grown quite portly, but always enjoyed splendid health,
and her death, therefore coming with such surprising sadness, has caused gloom
over a wide circle of friends and acquaintances all of whom sympathize with the
bereaved husband and family.

7 May 1929: A fast-roving fire totally destroyed the former Airydale
Manor house around 2:15 this morning. This structure was located on the
west side of Rt. 210, opposite the intersection with Reservoir Road (now
a dead end section of Thiells Road). The fire was discovered by Mrs.
Rose, and, when neighbors, Denton Bower, Butch DeCamp and Oscar Miller
arrived, they saw two separate fires on the first floor, which quickly
spread throughout the structure. The house, having no electricity, was
unoccupied and undergoing repairs by the owner, a George Edwards of
Newburgh.
The circumstances surrounding the use of this house by the prior tenants
received extensive coverage in the Nyack Evening Journal immediately
after the fire. Apparently, a questionable business was operated from
these premises, since numerous empty liquor bottles were found previous
to the destruction of the house. Newspaper accounts carried several
names for the place - "Mansion of Bottles," "Bottle and Cork Mansion,"
and some called it a "Sucker Joint." The previous owner, a Mrs. Shada
Airy, denied she ever conducted anything but a respectable operation.
Mrs. Airy did say that some of the bottles were hers, pre-prohibition,
and that the stories of "wild parties" are related to a prior operator,
"Chip Balitz." (From p. 38, "Celebrating 100 years: Wayne Hose Co. No.
1, Stony Point, NY - 1894-1994")
